Circa ICU

This novel project is a collaboration between the ICU research group and IBAS sleep researchers. This project seeks to understand the impact of critical illness, sustained sedation and ventilation in the ICU environment, on the circadian rhythm of patients. Changes in the circadian rhythm will be measured by 48 hours of regular urine collections for assessment of circulating melatonin. The project will evaluate whether changes in the circadian rhythm are related to outcomes for ICU patients including measures of illness acuity and delirium. It is expected that this will be the starting point for further work exploring the relationships between sleep disturbance and critical care outcomes of patients, that may lead to improvements in the management of these critically ill patients.
