It is known that there is a relationship between obesity and how well some parts of the breathing system work. It is less well known what effect obesity has on the muscles that are used for breathing. This project aims to investigate the relationship between body mass index (a measure of obesity) and respiratory muscle strength.
We will also investigate any differences in respiratory muscle strength between those that do and don't have obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS). Other factors which could influnce this relationship such as heart function and lung function will also be taken into account.
It is expected that there will be a relationship between BMI and respiratory muscle strength, with respiratory muscle getting weaker as BMI increases. It is also expected that those with OHS will have weaker muscles than those who don't.
