IBAS has received a grant to investigate the best treatment for Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome.
The grant is from the ResMed Foundation, a private charitable organisation based in the United States.
Not being able to breathe well overnight is a major problem for an increasing number of Australians with obesity and is now the major reason for complex, overnight breathing support. Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome, a potentially fatal disease, can be managed using two different strategies. The first (CPAP or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is a cheaper, simpler option that is easily available but doesn't work for everyone. The second (Bi-level ventilation) is a more expensive approach that requires specialised services. This nationwide study will determine which treatment is better for patients and more cost-effective for the community.
Commencing later in 2011, the project will bring together an experienced group referral centers for home ventilation, based around the Australasian Sleep Trials Network Ventilatory Support Working Group that is focused on optimizing clinical practice through high quality trials.
