Each February, a select group of researchers gather to share their current research, recent findings and future project plans. The focus is the upper airway - the part of the respiratory tract that sits above the larynx (or voice box and includes the nose, mouth and throat. This area is of vital important in the study of sleep and sleep apnoea, a disorder where the throat closes over repeatedly during sleep.
This year, the event is hosted by IBAS. A by-invitation group of forty researchers shared their work formally and informally across the event, which was held on the Mornington Peninsula over three days of wild weather! The symposium brings together highly experienced researchers with PhD students from research groups from around Australia and overseas.
Our thanks to convenor Dr Fergal O'Donoghue and organisers, Ms Allison Collins and Dr Maree Barnes.

RESPIRATORY BIOMARKERS IN MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE
The inability to breathe is unfortunately the most common cause of death in people living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Last year, our clinical research group in Melbourne reported that breathing...
Kudos to Dr. Lauren Booker & Dr. Jen Cori on their JOEM publication examining fatigue detection alarms in rural truck drivers. Their study explores the alarms' effectiveness, accuracy, and habituation, offering key insights into fatigue management.
