IBAS would like to congratulate Dr Jeanette Tamplin who has been awarded a University of Melbourne Chancellor’s Prize for excellence in her PhD thesis.
This is a prestigious award made to only six people amongst all those at the University who passed their PhD in 2012.
Jeanette's PhD research focused on the effects of singing training on respiratory function, voice and mood for people with quadriplegia. Using an RCT design, she found that people with chronic quadriplegia who participated in 12 weeks of therapeutic singing groups improved their voice projection and mood and showed improvement trends in respiratory function and muscle recruitment. A thematic analysis of participant interviews also suggested that music therapy improved mood, energy levels, motivation and social participation.
Jeanette was nominated for this award by her supervisors - IBAS Fellow Dr David Berlowitz and Music Therapists Professor Denise Grocke and Associate Professor Felicity Baker.
Jeanette will receive her medal at a ceremony in November.
