Inaugural Information Breakfast: a success by any measure

Over 100 people who attended the inaugural IBAS Information Breakfast felt the force of AFL legend David Parkin's passion for good health and learnt about the work of IBAS.

The breakfast, held on Wednesday 9th May at the Greensborough RSL, aimed to raise awareness of the research and education that occurs within the Institute.   IBAS CEO, Professor Christine McDonald, gave an overview of the work of the Institute as well as our respiratory based research, along with an insight into the joys of working in a heritage listed building!

Dr Mark Howard made sure that everyone drove home very carefully following the breakfast thanks to his presentation on the dangers of sleepiness when driving.

Dr David Berlowitz spoke about people affected by a spinal injury and the additional burden placed on them by the sleep disorders that affects nearly all those with quadriplegia soon after their injury.  The importance of his research program, aiming to better understand, identify and treat these sleep disorders was all too vividly explained via video by Bruno, a person affected by quadriplegia, who summed up the impact of having his sleep disorder diagnosed and treated in the simple words: 'you're just better at life'.

Mr Bill Noonan OAM, an IBAS Director, led the event which was attended by state politicians and local councillors, members of Victoria Police, representatives from the University of Melbourne, members of local clubs such as Probus, Rotary and OM:NI (Older Men: New Ideas), sports clubs, senior citizens and schools, as well as other interested people.  In addition to IBAS Directors and the presenters, IBAS was represented by Dr Maree Barnes, Senior Research Officer and Ms Leona Knapman, PhD Candidate.

A number of attendees took advantage of the free health screening, run by preventionXpress in conjunction with IBAS.  The screening was capably conducted by IBAS Associate and nurse, Ann Distefano.

The breakfast was kindly sponsored by Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, with Mr Salvatore Giandino (Senior Associate at the Greensborough office) also highlighting the dangers of sleep related accidents from a legal viewpoint.

Mr David Parkin OAM, who is also an Adjunct Professor at the School of Exercise and Nutritional Science at Deakin University, rounded out the speakers by emphasising the importance of looking after our health, ideally starting with children forming good habits early in life.  Men were given a strong wake up call to not be complacent about their health.  Everyone was glad they had finished eating by the time he referred to the (absolutely delicious) cooked breakfast as the 'death breakfast'!

Thanks to the two people who were the on-the-ground organisers of the event - Marg Bunn (IBAS) and Bree Watkins (preventionXpress).
